This booklet gives a glimpse into the world of child development with an emphasis on the first years and the developmental characteristics of communication and language. It also provides important information about the challenges expected of a child with a visual impairment or blindness in the development of communication and language skills and equips the reader with tools, ideas, tips and examples, for therapeutic work at home or as part of a rehabilitative daycare. The booklet was written based on the extensive knowledge and experience of the Elia Kindergarten staff with children with visual impairments or blindness and is supported by a literature review that presents the important theoretical and research background that supports our work at Elia.
The booklet will answer questions:

  • What is the rationale for the work that guides us in the ELI organization for rehabilitative work with children with visual impairments or blindness.
  • How language and communication develop and what are the main causes of language and communication impairments in children with visual impairment or blindness.
  • Ways of treatment and rehabilitative work in children with visual impairment or blindness in early childhood and kindergarten to correct communication and language impairments.
  • Communication, language, speech and everything in between (ages 0-3): Tips and guidance for a parent or caregiver of a child with a visual impairment or blindness.
  • Table summarizing developmental milestones in language and communication, inhibitors associated with visual impairment and treatment suggestions.
